Dangers of lithium ion batteries

CASPER, Wyo. (KCWY) -- The battery in the back of a laptop can be your best friend, or your worst enemy.

"The way those batteries are constructed, that's the whole deal. As long as the case is intact, we typically don't have as much of a hazard," said Justin Smith of the fire department in Casper, Wyoming.

The hazard Smith referred to is when devices such as a phone or laptop ignite due to a crack in the battery.

Combine that with overheating, and the situation becomes dangerous.

"Heat is always an issue with computers and batteries as well. Laptops particularly, the batteries will get very warm as they're being used,” Computer Logic owner Brian White said.

Even though a laptop can conveniently be placed in that location, having it on your lap and covered up by cloth or bedding can actually cause more overheating.

That may lead to a fire within your home

"You want to have that device able to breathe," White added.

If you give the device room to breathe, you can also breathe a sigh of relief.
